Electricity Energy Saving
Energy Saving Light Bulb? What difference & how much savings?

I used to use 40W circular tube (extra bright type) in my living room. Recently, looking for new lightings for my new home. I intend to pick this design that need to fix 8 bulbs. The sales person suggested 20W energy savings type. So 20W X 8 bulbs = 160W. Will 160W engery saving bulbs Save more electricity than the 40W tube? I am confused? With 8 bulbs, its still not very bright. Can someone explain to me.

Obviously 160 watts is a bigger number than 40 watts, so if those numbers are correct, you are using 4 times more power.

But CFLs can be confusing. Read the packaging carefully. Usually it says something like: “Equivalent light of a 20 watt incandescent”. That does NOT mean it uses 20 watts, just that is puts out as much light as that size incandescent.

Read further, you will find in smaller print: “Power usage 8 watts” or something like that. That is the actual power used. So 8×8 = 64 watts. That is the actual power used. Still higher than your original 40 watts, but not by a lot.

I would not expect switching from the 40 watt fluorescent to CFLs would save any energy.
