Dell laptop screen has gone black, images can only be seen upclose?
Hi,
I own a dell inspiron 5100 laptop and its lcd screen has gone black. However, if I look upclose to the screen I can dimly see the desktop or any program which is running. I have been using the laptop with an external monitor and everything has been fine, therefore, it does not seem like a video card problem. Can anyone advice me on what type of problem this might be. Is this an inverter problem? a backlight problem? should I buy a new screen or just replace a certain part?
First, try the obvious:
Most laptops are able to toggle between an external display and the built in screen. Sometimes the laptop can get confused so it is worth toggling between external and built in screen. As most have several different settings it is worth doing this several times.
If the screen doesn’t light up, it’s usually, like you said, either the backlight or the inverter. It could be some other problem (cable,motherboard) but it’s not as likely.
I had the same problem with an old Dell Latitude laptop. It turned out that it was the inverter that went bad. It was cheap enough on ebay (under $20) for the inverter board so I took a chance and lucked out. I figured, even if it was the backlight, it would be worth it to replace the inverter also while I was in there. Also, replacing the backlight is much more work than replacing the power inverter.
