What they are looking for is a way to reduce the amount of electricity they have to pay for, and in turn to lower what they pay out each month in utility bills. By drawing on the free energy that comes from the sun they are able to create more of their own electricity, and to use less from the energy grid.

There are a couple of reasons that may keep you from leaving the grid completely. You may find that although you cannot rely completely on your own electric generation system, you can still take advantage of using solar power at home. It doesn’t have to be an all or nothing proposition.
There are some areas that do not have a steady supply of direct sunlight. Some regions, like the Great Lakes region and parts of the Pacific Northwest have above average cloud cover. While there are many days of sunshine, there are also a lot of days that are very overcast. You may have beautiful weather one day, and then several days where you never see the sun. In areas like this it is hard to disconnect from the utility company. You need to rely on the power grid as a power source.

Another reason some people choose to remain on the grid is that they do not want a solar collection system that is large enough to generate the amount of electricity needed to be self-sustaining. In the past solar panels were large and somewhat unsightly. That is not as much of an issue these days. Solar panels are much smaller, and they can be installed in a way that they are not nearly as noticeable as in years past.
One reason that keeps some people from having a large enough system, at least initially, is the cost involved. If you are paying to have your system professionally installed it can drive up the cost of your system significantly. The labor costs are sometimes almost as much as the system itself. There are programs that can teach you to build and install your own system, and if you feel up to the task they can help bring your out of pocket expenses way down.
